Leonor Moreno

Leonor Moreno gave the Lady Rockets their first lead of the night with just under two minutes to play. Moreno's basket spurred a Westwood comeback and win.

The Lady Rockets were back at Westwood Middle School Monday night for the team's final home game of the season. Taking on Fayetteville City, Westwood powered through in the fourth quarter to win 31-20 on eighth grade night.

"We finally decided to play like we play, Westwood Lady Rocket basketball, in the last two minutes," Coach Angela Houck said. "I don't know who they were before that."

A close game throughout, Westwood spent much of the first two quarters looking up at the Lady Tigers on the scoreboard. The closest the Lady Rockets came to a lead during the first half was a buzzer beater from Anna Johnson right before halftime to tie it at 12-12.

Fayetteville City continued to hold onto a narrow lead in a low-scoring third quarter, taking a 17-16 lead into the fourth.

With just above two minutes left in the game, Johnson again knocked in the tying score at 20 apiece. On the next play, Leonor Moreno stole the ball from a Lady Tiger and converted an easy layup to give Westwood its first lead of the night.

"I was kind of excited," Moreno said afterward. "It felt good."

Moreno's shot brought the Lady Rockets new life. In the last minute and a half the girls put up 11 points and brought the home crowd a win.

Johnson led the Lady Rockets with 11 points. Moreno followed with six, with Bryleigh Gray right behind at five. Joely Sain finished the night with four points. Maddie Sullivan hit three points and Allie Sullivan came in behind with two.
