It was a busy week for several area sports teams. Coffee County swimming traveled down for its Tullahoma meet on Tuesday, with teams from Central High School, Coffee County Middle and Westwood Middle competing. Thursday night saw Central High School wrestling travel to Smyrna to take on Stewarts Creek and Blackman. Westwood basketball also traveled Thursday for its final regular season games against Huntland.
Swimming makes wake in Tullahoma
Tuesday night's road meet in Tullahoma featured 12 high schools and four middle schools. At the high school level, Central High School finished 10-1 as a team, with the boys going 10-1 and girls going 11-0.
Kaylee Williams and Jack Beachboard posted state qualifying times for the 200-yard individual medley and the 500-yard freestyle. Kennedy Norman-Young, Jase Rice, Anna O'Conner, Hannah Richardson, Emilia Walker and William Tobitt all posted regional qualifying times in their events.
In the middle school competition, Westwood went 1-2 on the meet, with the boys going 0-3 and the girls going 1-2. Elsie Lazalier, Nick Bogle and Abby Gilday posted regional qualifying times.
Coffee Middle went 2-1, with the Lady Raiders finishing 3-0 and the Raiders finishing 2-1. Elli Masters, Emily Williams, Clancy Stand, Emily Snider, Patience Driggers and Riley Bellomy all posted regional qualifying times.
Westwood basketball falls to Huntland
Westwood Middle School basketball traveled to Franklin County Thursday to take on Huntland. In their last games before the start of the Duck River Valley Conference Tournament, the Lady Rockets fell 29-17, followed by the Rockets getting shut down 47-23.
Down by seven at the half, the Lady Rockets were only able to hit four more points in the final two quarters. Despite holding Huntland to nine over the same time period, Westwood's shooting issues prevented the team from taking advantage in the loss. Anna Johnson led the Lady Rockets with nine points, followed by Leonor Moreno's four.
In the boys' game, Westwood was limited to nine points in the first half while Huntland jumped out for a ten-point lead. The Rockets continued to be limited to single-digit scoring over the final two quarters and returned home with a loss.
Konor Heaton and Andre Johnson each hit five points for the Rockets. The duo was followed by four from Jayden Carter and Dylen Trail. Izick Sierra and Eli Felice each hit two points, with Caiden Warren knocking in a free throw for one.
Wrestling grapples to a split
Central High School faced off with two of the region's top teams Thursday night at Stewarts Creek. Against Blackman, the team scored wins from Brett Francis, Hunter Waring, Jesse Smith, Devin Judge and Dakota Chalker. Despite these defeats Blackman defeated CHS 47-24.
The Raiders responded with a come-from-behind victory over Stewarts Creek. CHS found itself down 27-6 early on, but would catch a second wind as the match continued. Francis, Chalker, Rey Reyes, Nick Martinez, Christopher Speagle and Cardin Stump came in clutch with wins to bring CHS back into the mix. The Raiders escaped with a 38-37 win over the Red Hawks.
In the girls' competiion, the Lady Raiders went undefeated off wins from Andrea Hickman, Mary Anne Walker and Lyra Leftwich over Blackman.
