The Coffee County basketball teams laid claim to win in their season-opening home district games, sweeping Columbia this past week.
For the Lady Raiders it was a dominating performance as they crushed their guests 69-34. The game was never in question as the Lady Lions growl was muted after they were only able to put up a single point in the first period. Conversely, the Lady Raiders were able to put up a baker’s dozen in the first. Helping spur on the lopsided victory was Coffee County’s tenacious defense which caused 17 Lady Lion turnovers.
Marley Perry led the way for the Lady Raiders as she bucketed 13 points. Coffee County’s leading scorer on the season, Bella Vinson had 12 points and Jalie Ruehling contributed 10.
In the boys’ game, Kyle Farless paced the Raiders with 12 points on the night as they tamed the Lions to improve to 8-4 on the season with a 48-45 win. The Raiders led for most of the game, trailing only for a brief period in the first half. Coffee was actually able to build their lead to double digits before a rally in the second half cut the margin to just four.
A tight defense in the waning second of the game forced key Columbia turnovers which helped the Raiders cement the win.
Aiding Farless in scoring was Jaxon Wooten with nine and Jaxson Vaughn with two.
