Rockets rule the roost in district play

Bryleigh Gray overcomes a double team as the Lady Rockets stayed perfect on the season, Westwood amassing a 12-0 record going into 2020.

Westwood continued cutting a swath through Warren County’s middle school teams, this time hammering Irving College in a pair of games to finish up 2019 without a blemish on their record.

The Lady Rockets had zero trouble with the girls from southern Warren County as they had 10 points on the scoreboard before Irving College got its first point. Part of the issue for Irving College was the inability to hold on to the rock as Westwood forced 20 turnovers on the night while making very few miscues themselves.

Princess Penalzoa was again queen of the hardwood as she led Westwood with 12 on the night. Leonor Moreno joined her in the double digit club with 10 while Remi Benjamin had eight.

Westwood goes into 2020 with a 12-0 record and are untouched in the district, standing at 9-0.

The Westwood boys also had an easy time with Irving College, outscoring them four-to-one as they won 44-11.

Just like the girls earlier in the evening, the Rockets got 10 in the bank before their guests ever marked the scorer’s book. The rout was so bad that after taking a 20-point lead, the starters were taken out. But, that was plenty of enough time for leading scorer, Jayden Carter to get 16 points to not only lead his team but also single-handedly outscore the entire Irving College team.

The Rockets are now 10-2 overall and 8-1 in the district, their only blemish being a three-point loss to Centertown earlier this month.

The Westwood teams will head down Highway 55 to Morrison on Jan. 7 as the season hits its home stretch.
