CMS baseball blanks North Franklin

Coffee Middle School baseball kicked off its Central Tennessee Conference Tournament schedule Wednesday, April 24. Taking on North Franklin at Tullahoma, the Red Raiders advanced to the next round with a 7-0 win.

Aiden Robertson and Jacob Holder combined for a shutout, with Robertson striking out eight and giving up six hits through five innings. Holder came in the for the last two innings, adding another five strikeouts without giving up a hit or a run.

At the plate, CMS kicked it off in the bottom of the second inning when Nolan Jernigan knocked a line drive to center and sent in Hayden Garr. The Raiders continued to build their lead in the next inning when Cole Bryce came home off a Cole Pippenger fly ball.

The boys took off for five runs in the bottom of the sixth, putting the game further out of reach for North and securing the victory.

CMS finished with nine hits, led by Jernigan with three.

Westwood softball defeats Huntland

Westwood Middle School softball was back at Dave King Park Wednesday, April 24 for the second round of the Duck River Valley Conference tournament. The Lady Rockets went up early and didn't fall behind in a 10-4 victory.

Lillee Scott got things started in the top of the first inning by drilling a fly ball out to left field. Abby Clark and Brooklyn Blake came home on the play to put Westwood up 2-0. Two at-bats later, Kara Beth Patton tripled, sending in Scott to finish the inning up 3-0. 

After Huntland responded with a single run in the bottom of the first, Paisley Campbell added another for the Lady Rockets when she scored on an error at first base. 

The Lady Rockets continued to push ahead with another six runs through the game's remainder. Huntland went on a three-run rally in the bottom of the seventh, but Westwood cut it short to win by six.

Westwood finished the game with 14 hits, led by Campbell with three. Emma Kidder pitched through all seven innings, striking out 11 while holding Huntland to six hits and four runs.

CMS soccer rolls North Franklin

Coffee Middle soccer stayed at home Wednesday, April 24, for a matchup with North Franklin in the Central Tennessee Conference Tournament. The Red Raiders went up early and didn't look back in a 7-2 win.

"We came together and we played like a great team," Coach Ryan Wood said. "We weren't just good players, we were a great team."

CMS started off with a pair of goals to take a 2-0 lead. After North responded with its first, Isiah Campbell knocked in another for the Raiders to make it a 3-1 game. CMS added three more before the half ended for a 6-1 advantage. 

After the Raiders notched another early in the second, North found its second goal of the game. CMS didn't allow another to secure a spot in the next round of the tournament.

"We've got momentum going in the tournament," Wood said. "Saturday will tell us, but I've got high hopes."

Javier Rodriguez led the way for the Raiders with three of the team's goals.
