CHS baseball loses tight matchup with Shelbyville
Central High School baseball hit the road Wednesday, April 10, for the second of a two-game district series with Shelbyville Central. In a game that turned into a pitcher's duel, the Golden Eagles had a little more luck to hand CHS a 1-0 loss.
Harley Hinshaw pitched through all seven innings and held Shelbyville to four hits. The Raider batters had a little more success, finishing with five through the game and led by Hayden Skipper with two. CHS was unable to take advantage, leaving eight runners on base through all seven innings.
The game's only run came in the bottom of the sixth inning when Golden Eagle Dalton Puckett came home from third base on a passed ball.
Westwood softball shuts down Cascade
Coming off their first loss of the season to Huntland Tuesday, April 2, Westwood Middle softball wasted no time bouncing back Wednesday, April 10 against Cascade. The Lady Rockets went ahead early and defeated the Lady Champions 6-1.
Audri Patton got it started for Westwood in the bottom of the first inning. Coming in as Emma Kidder's courtesy runner, Patton came home from second base on an error at first base following a bunt from Abby Clark. Two at-bats later, Lilee Scott knocked a sacrifice fly to right field to bring in Clark and finish the inning up 2-0.
The Lady Rockets added another four runs before Cascade got on the board in the top of the seventh. The Lady Champions were unable to capitalize and the game ended in 6.5 innings.
Westwood finished with seven hits, including two each from Clark and Aleah Wakefield. Kidder pitched through the whole game, striking out eight while surrendering two hits and one run.
Westwood soccer routs Fayetteville
Hitting the road Wednesday, April 10 for a conference showdown, Westwood Middle soccer jumped out for a 9-0 victory.
Izick Sierra led the Rockets' offense with two goals and three assists. Ian Welden and Nico Sanfilipo also finished with two goals each.
David Dolack had one goal and an assist, while Caleb Cargile and Hunter Crosslin each finished with a single goal.
Westwood tennis bests Warren County
Hosting Warren County at Fred Deadman Park Wednesday, April 10, Westwood Middle tennis picked up a pair of wins. The Lady Rockets took off for a 5-2 victory. The Rockets added a close 4-3 win to complete the sweep.
In girls' singles, Westwood had wins from Rylea McNamara (6-0), Anna Johnson (6-0) and Abby Gilday (6-3). In doubles, the team of McNamara and Ocean Sanfilippo won 6-2. The team of Johnson and Sarah Khan added a 7-5 victory.
On the boys' side, the Rockets had singles wins from Jonathan Nelson (6-0), Caelan Ducker (6-4) and Edgar Guzman (6-0). In doubles, the team of Nelson and Jeffrey Hale won 6-0.
