Lady Raider soccer goes 2-1 at tournament
Central High School girls' soccer traveled to Tullahoma this past weekend to compete at the SMT Tournament. The Lady Raiders finished the two-day event with a positive record after three matchups against La Vergne, Stewarts Creek and Silverdale Academy.
In their first game on Friday, August 23, the girls defeated La Vergne 6-0. Within the first minute of play, Jenna Garretson netted a shot off an assist from Reyna Flores to put CHS ahead. The Garretson-Flores connection struck again in the game's 12th minute and Flores scored one of her own two minutes later to make it a 3-0 lead. Katie Cotten assisted on Flores's goal.
Before halftime, CHS scored one more goal in the 26th minute from Cotten, with an assist from Reagan Ellison.
Cotten followed up in the second half to make it a 5-0 game off of an assist from Garretson. Later in the 50th minute, Garretson notched her third goal on a penalty kick to complete a hat trick.
The Lady Raiders were unable to duplicate this success in their first game on Saturday, August 24 against Stewarts Creek. The Redhawks went up early and defeated CHS 4-1.
After Stewarts Creek scored two goals in the first nine minutes, Flores put the Lady Raiders on the board off an assist from Marley Perry. Neither team netted another goal in the first half to make it a 2-1 Stewarts Creek lead at intermission.
In the second, the Redhawks added two more goals before the game ended early due to an injury to Diana Ramirez, who suffered a bad concussion. This was the Lady Raiders' first loss of the year.
In their final game against Silverdale later on Saturday, the Lady Raiders got back in the win column with a 5-0 victory.
Garretson knocked in the first half's lone goal and Silverdale added an own goal early in the second. Cotten and Flores followed this with the team's third and fourth goals, respectively. Flores was assisted by Anna Amado. Jayda Wright scored the final goal for CHS in the shutout win.
The team finished the Silverdale game with 38 shots on goal, 20 of which were on frame. After the weekend schedule, the Lady Raiders' overall record stood at 4-1.
JV Lady Raiders win home tournament
Central High School volleyball's junior varsity team took to the court on Saturday, August 24, to host the Junior Slam JV/Freshman tournament. The Lady Raiders marched to a 6-0 record on the day and won the tournament's gold division.
In early pool play, CHS defeated Franklin County's No. 2 team, Lead Academy and Fayetteville by match scores of 2-0. After the team defeated Franklin County in a quarterfinals rematch, the Lady Raiders followed up with a win over Tullahoma in the semifinals.
In the gold division finals, CHS defeated Lincoln County 25-19 and 25-22 for a straight-set victory.
