Red Raider’s defense holds off Rockvale

Tristan Galey sacks the Rockvale quarterback.

The Red Raiders came into Rockvale’s home turf on Oct. 2 with a mission to bounce back from last week’s last second loss to Cookeville, and bounce back they did as the Red Raiders led for the entire contest.

Rockvale’s opening drive wouldn’t inspire much confidence in the Red Raiders chances of coming away with a win. The Rockets had a long march down the field taking up seven minutes of game time as the Rocket backfield gashed the Red Raider defenders. Coffee bounced back however as the team forced a fourth down attempt that Rockvale failed to convert.

Conner Shemwell would then hit Travis Martin for an eighty yard bomb that would put the Raiders up seven with less than four minutes left to play in the quarter.

The Red Raider defense once again made a key stop against the Rockets and forced a punt deep in Rockvale’s own territory. Henry Garcia, who would also have an interception and key pass deflection on the night, blocked the punt and then scooped up the loose ball for a defensive touchdown for the Raiders.

After the explosive first quarter both teams’ defenses keyed in on the other’s offensive play. Neither team could get past the 50 yard line as possession after possession was flipped. This stalemate was stopped close to the end of the game as Konor Heaton broke off a long play for the Red Raiders that resulted in a touchdown.

The resulting extra point was blocked, but with the way the game was going this score was all it took to seal the game for the Red Raiders with a final score of 20-14. The Red Raiders next play Maplewood at home.
