The Red Raiders won’t get much time to catch their breath after a 38-7 drumming from the Wildcats as the team has to travel to Shelbyville this Friday.

Shelbyville has lost its last two games first against Tullahoma and most recently against Marshall County. Tullahoma defeated the Golden Eagles with a score of 28-14 while Marshall squeaked out a win 21-14. Despite those two losses Shelbyville has put up a strong defensive showing despite running into an athletic force from Marshall County’s starting quarterback Devonte Davis. The Golden Eagles were able to keep the dynamic athlete away from the end zone as best they could. The Golden Eagles were able to march down the field at the end of the half to make it a one score game. The Golden Eagles were unable to stop a fourth quarter comeback however, despite tying the game up with two clutch throws from Kade Cunningham, one for the touchdown and the other for the two-point conversion.

The Wildcats’ offensive prowess shouldn’t come to a shock to anyone considering last Friday’s Coffee Pot. The Golden Eagles were able to match the Wildcats at the beginning of the game as both teams scored early touchdowns. Though it’s still early in the season one weakness of the Golden Eagles appears to be at kicker. In the beginning two weeks Shelbyville has missed and least two point after attempts usually forcing the offense to go for two at some point during the game. Whether this becomes a factor in Friday’s match up against the Red Raiders is anyone’s guess but it’s something to be aware of. In fact, the first touchdown that the Golden Eagles scored this season had a missed point after attempt giving the Wildcats a one-point lead. Kade Cunningham once again orchestrated a Golden Eagle eight-point swing in the second half to tie the game against the Wildcats.

The golden eagle offense appears to live and die through Kade Cunningham. If the Red Raiders can slow Cunningham down they should have a chance to bounce back after the grueling loss to the Wildcats. Defensively the Golden Eagles have made plays in both the games they’ve played so far, though they appear to have trouble capitalizing on it. Not taking unnecessary risks should minimize these splashy plays from Shelbyville. Both Shelbyville losses came from late scores so it’s possible that the Golden Eagle defense wears down late. Look for big runs from Konor Heaton and tough battles in the trenches from the offensive line.

While cliché a win for the Red Raiders here would assuredly get their minds right after the tough loss. There is still plenty of season left to go and hopefully the team’s confidence isn’t shaken.
