Westwood rallies in the third to win conference title

Jayden Carter gashes the Fayetteville defense for a big gain.

The Westwood Rockets capped off their undefeated season with a second half rally against Fayetteville for the DRVC crown. Things looked grim in for the Rockets going into the second half of the DRVC championship game on Oct. 8. Fayetteville had been potent in the passing game with three touchdowns while shutting down Westwood’s normally potent running attack. The Rockets were undeterred however as coach Chad Dyer rallied the team during halftime. What followed was a blistering offensive series by the Rockets as the team scored an unanswered 26 points on Fayetteville in the third quarter. Jayden Carter rushed for 201 yards and three touchdowns on his way to championship MVP. He was joined by Skylar Stinson who rushed for 35 yards and a touchdown. The Rockets defense also shined in the third quarter as Torin Vanzandenberg forced a safety that knocked Fayetteville out of the game mentally. The safety had many layers to it as it was facilitated by a monster kickoff that Fayetteville couldn’t field. It was at this point that the game seemed to firmly be in Westwood’s favor. Fayetteville was able to string together an offensive drive at the end of the game but at that point there wasn’t enough time to even entertain a comeback attempt as the Rockets defeated Fayetteville 34-26.
