The Coffee County Red Raiders welcomed the Summit Spartans to town Friday night for their homecoming game, with both teams entering the matchup at 2-5 and looking to pick up their third win of the season.

A quick start from Coffee County turned into a deficit as the game continued, with Summit ultimately coming out on top 42-14 to hand the Red Raiders their fifth straight loss.

Coffee County wasted little time making its presence felt. The Red Raiders opened the scoring with a 58-yard touchdown run by Kaysen Lowery, who broke free and raced into the end zone to give Coffee County an early 7-0 advantage.

The Red Raiders continued to find success on the ground as they marched down the field on their next scoring drive. Coffee County moved the chains and picked up crucial first downs before Kam Stafford punched the ball into the end zone on a 2-yard touchdown run. With the extra point, the Red Raiders extended their lead to 14-0, bringing the first quarter to a close with Coffee County firmly in control.

Summit responded in the second quarter, beginning its comeback and showing that the Spartans were not going to go away quietly.

Summit found the end zone on a 16-yard touchdown reception before converting a two-point attempt to cut Coffee County’s lead to 14-8. The score shifted the momentum toward the Spartans and put pressure on the Red Raiders to respond.

Both teams struggled to establish consistent offensive momentum during the next series of possessions, trading three and outs as the defenses worked to limit scoring opportunities. Summit eventually found its footing again, moving the ball down the field and reaching the red zone.

The Spartans capitalized on the opportunity with a 6-yard rushing touchdown, bringing the game even. Summit was unable to convert the ensuing two-point attempt, but the damage had been done. After opening the game with a 14-point lead, Coffee County suddenly found itself in a tie heading into halftime.

The teams entered the break knotted at 14-14, setting the stage for what appeared to be a competitive second half.

Coming out of halftime, both defenses continued to make things difficult for the opposing offenses. The third quarter featured a series of stalled drives, penalties, and defensive stops as neither team initially managed to gain a decisive advantage.

Summit eventually broke through, however, finding the end zone on a 15-yard touchdown to take its first lead of the night at 20-14. After surrendering the early advantage, Coffee County now faced the challenge of generating another scoring drive to keep pace with the Spartans.

The Red Raiders struggled to find an answer on offense as Summit continued to build momentum. Coffee County was unable to recreate the success it had experienced during the opening quarter, and the Spartans took advantage of the Red Raiders’ difficulties to extend their lead.

As the second half progressed, the Red Raiders also had to contend with turnovers and several difficult calls that complicated their efforts to get back into the game. With Summit continuing to capitalize on its opportunities, the deficit grew increasingly difficult for Coffee County to overcome.

The Spartans added another touchdown to extend their advantage to 26-14, putting the Red Raiders in a position where they needed a response to keep their homecoming hopes alive. That response never happened, as Summit continued to find opportunities to score while Coffee County struggled to regain its footing.

Summit added two more touchdowns as the game moved toward its conclusion, stretching the lead to 34-14 before eventually pushing the advantage to 42-14. What began as a promising night for the Red Raiders had turned into a difficult second-half performance, with the Spartans pulling away to claim the victory.

Coffee County will look to regroup as the Red Raiders prepare to host the Ravenwood Raptors, who enter the matchup with a 6-2 record. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. Friday.
