America Saves Week is a great time to address financial planning
The theme for 2026 America Saves Week, April 6-10, is “Own Your Financial Story: Small Steps, Big Impact.”
This initiative focuses on promoting financial resilience, encouraging Americans to automate savings, reduce debt, and set actionable goals.
Each day has its own theme. The theme for Monday is “Building a Strong Foundation”. Building a strong financial foundation is the process of creating stability, security, and long-term wealth by managing cash flow, reducing debt, and planning for the future. It involves prioritizing essential needs, protecting assets, and investing consistently to ensure financial resilience against unexpected events.
Speaking of “unexpected events”, Tuesday’s theme is “Expect the Unexpected”. Expecting the unexpected in financial planning requires building a resilient, flexible strategy that includes a 3–6 month emergency fund. Proactive measures include creating contingency (Plan B) options and maintaining high liquidity (cash on hand) to handle job loss, health crises, or major repairs without derailing long-term goals.
The theme for Wednesday is “Dream Big, Plan with Purpose”. Dreaming big and planning with purpose in financial planning means aligning your money with your values, rather than just focusing on numbers, to turn long-term aspirations, such as early retirement, starting a business, or building a legacy, into a structured, actionable roadmap.
Thursday’s theme is “Rewrite the Debt Narrative.” Rewriting the debt narrative means shifting from a mindset of shame, scarcity, and burden to one of leverage, cash-flow management, and strategic wealth-building. Instead of viewing debt as a personal failure, financial planning reframes it as a temporary tool to be managed, utilized, or eliminated to meet longterm goals.
The theme for Friday is “Your Story, Your Future.” Your story and future in fi-nancial planning is a personalized roadmap that defines where you are, where you want to go, and the steps to get there. It involves setting clear goals such as retirement, debt reduction, or buying a home, and establishing a budget, saving automatically, and investing tailored to your life stage.
Individuals may participate in America Saves Week by pledging their commitment to saving. One can do this by signing up at americasaves.org/pledge. We are all encouraged to automate savings by treating savings like a bill you pay yourself. And finally, we should take a few moments to conduct a financial check-in by reviewing our budget, debt, and goals.
