PREP ROUNDUP: Area teams pick up Thursday wins

The Coffee County volleyball team was back on the road to face off against Columbia Central in a Class 3A District 9 match Thursday evening.

The two teams went the distance, but the Lady Raiders ultimately came out on top 3-2 to return home with a district victory.

After Coffee County opened the match with a 25-20 win in the first set, the Lady Lions answered with a 25-15 win in the second set to tie the match at 1-1. The two teams continued to trade set victories from there, with the Lady Raiders taking the third set 25-18 before Columbia kept the match alive by winning the fourth set 31-29.

In the decisive fifth set, Coffee County came out on top 15-10 to seal the match victory.

Andon Selvog led the team in aces with eight. Hayleigh Harris added two. Danni Hillis and Jenslee Nogodula had one ace each.

It was another career night for Nogodula, who broke her previous program single game record of 29 digs with 30 on the evening. Harris followed with 19. Isabelle Saner added 14 digs, finishing just ahead of Hillis with 13. Selvog added nine digs. Cara Newlin came away with seven digs. Cailey Sturgill and Paisley Dyer both recorded three each. Blaine Weaver and Addy Wild each had two digs.

Harris took the top spot for kills with 17 total. Up next was Hillis with 13. Dyer was credited with seven kills. Newlin followed with six. Sturgill picked up four kills. Saner added two. Wild had one kill.

Dyer was the team’s blocks leader with two. Newlin and Wild both had one.

Selvog led the way in assists, with 26 over the course of the match. Saner followed with 13. Nogodula notched three assists. Hillis had one.

Coffee County (7-4, 2-1 district) travels to Battle Creek for a 6 p.m. match Monday.

MIDDLE SCHOOL GIRLS’ SOCCER

Westwood 9, Huntland 0

The Lady Rockets returned home and picked up yet another shutout victory in their game against Huntland Thursday.

Raegan Sample led the way with five goals. Ashlyn Allen followed with two. Wynnslee Smartt and Italia Orpineda both had one goal each.

Westwood remains at home to take on Thurman Francis for the team’s eighth grade night at 5:30 p.m. Monday.

MIDDLE SCHOOL FOOTBALL

Westwood takes down Fayetteville

The Rockets continued to roll through their regular-season schedule with a road victory over Fayetteville Thursday night.

Westwood (5-0) returns home to host North Franklin Thursday. Kickoff is set for 6:30 p.m.

The Lady Raiders went the distance against Harris, but ultimately won the third set to return home with a victory Thursday evening.

Coffee County hosts Battle Creek for a 5:30 p.m. match Monday.

MIDDLE SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL

Westwood 2, Fayetteville 1

The Lady Rockets returned home from Fayetteville with a victory Wednesday evening, their second of the week.

After winning the first set 25-12, Westwood fell in the second set 25-20 to send the match to a winner-take-all third set.

The Lady Rockets went on to hold off Fayetteville to win the third set 16-14 to seal the match victory. Westwood (10-4) remains on the road to take on Blanche at 5 p.m. Monday.
