Coffee County boys’ soccer gave itself chances up until the clock struck zero, but ultimately opened its week with a home district loss Tuesday night.
Hosting Warren County in a rematch of last week’s 2-2 draw in McMinnville, the Red Raiders climbed back into it but were unable to complete the comeback in a 4-3 loss.
The Pioneers jumped out to an early first-half lead, opening it up with four unanswered goals through the 13:19 mark.
Still down by four with less than five minutes until the break, Coffee County got on the board when Will Rogers sent a penalty kick into the back of the net with 4:21 remaining. Kameron Pobanz added another Red Raider goal with less than a minute left until halftime, cutting the Warren County lead to 4-2 heading into the second.
After 20 scoreless minutes to open the second half, Coffee County moved one step closer to Warren County on a goal from Michael Vieras with 19:11 left to play. The Red Raiders continued to have multiple scoring opportunities over the game’s remainder, but were unable to deliver the equalizer before time expired.
The loss put Coffee County at 5-6-1 overall and 5-3-1 in district play.
The Red Raiders remain at home to close out their district schedule against Lincoln County Thursday evening. Start time is set for 7 p.m.
