After a pair of road games to kick off the 2026 regular season, Coffee County baseball was back on its home turf Friday night.
Hosting Smyrna, the Red Raiders made a late push but came up short in a 6-3 loss to remain winless.
After the Bulldogs got on the board in the top of the second, it remained a 1-0 game for two and a half more innings. Smyrna went on to expand its lead in the top of the fifth, adding five more runs to take a 6-0 lead on Coffee County.
After keeping Smyrna from advancing any further over the next two innings, the Red Raiders scored their first run of the game in the bottom of the seventh on a Davis McKenzie line drive to bring in Boone Floyd. Two at-bats later, a grounder from Elijah Vernon drove in Landon Abellana from third base to make it a 6-2 game with one out.
The Red Raiders cut further into the Smyrna lead not long after, this time on a fly ball from Carter Bell to drive in McKenzie from third.
With the Bulldog lead now cut to three with two outs and with runners on first and second, the Red Raiders’ pursuit of a comeback ended in a strikeout with the tying run at the plate.
Floyd had two of Coffee County’s five hits, with one each for McKenzie, Vernon and Bell. McKenzie, Vernon and Bell each had one RBI for a team total of three.
Isaiah Deadman got it started on the mound, coming off after five innings with seven strikeouts, seven hits, six runs and three walks. Xander Meeks closed it out, adding two strikeouts, one hit and one walk over the remaining two innings.
Coffee County (0-3) remains at home to host White County Monday night. First pitch is set for 7 p.m.
