Man charged after striking MPD officer during traffic stop in East Memphis, police say

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — An officer is expected to recover after being struck by a car during a traffic stop Thursday night in East Memphis, according to the Memphis Police Department (MPD).

Police said the driver of that car has been arrested.

Everything unfolded around 8 p.m. Thursday near Getwell Road and Park Avenue, police said. MPD said that’s where the officer pulled over a driver before the driver took off from the scene — hitting the officer.

More MPD officers started chasing the driver who then crashed near Goodman Street and Goodman Street, which is about a mile from where the traffic stop happened, police said.

MPD said that’s where the driver was taken into custody.

The driver was identified as 40-year-old Marcus Ross. Police said he was arrested and charged with the following:

  • Aggravated assault on a law enforcement officer
  • Disregarding a red light
  • Driving while license suspended/canceled/revoked
  • Evading arrest on foot
  • Evading arrest in a vehicle
  • Violation of financial law
  • And reckless driving
