PREP ROUNDUP: CHS softball blanks Riverdale to open season

Coffee County softball began its 2026 slate in the win column Wednesday night.
Hosting Riverdale, the Lady Raiders jumped out for seven runs in the bottom of the first inning on the way to a 7-0 victory.
Bailey Hale led the way at the plate with two of the team’s six hits. Cara Newlin, Taylor McBride, Maggie Montgomery and Haleigh Skipper each had one.
Coffee County finished the game with seven RBI, led by Montgomery and Skipper with two each. Newlin, Briley Jernigan and Kamryn Hoback each added one.
Lily Norman got it started in the circle, striking out eight while holding Riverdale to two walks through the first five innings. Maddi Scott followed for the game’s remainder, adding four strikeouts, two hits and two walks over two innings.
Coffee County (1-0) will travel to Chattanooga Friday to take part in the two-day CCS Tournament.
Middle School Baseball
Coffee County 8, Battle Creek 5
The Red Raiders kicked off their 2026 season with a road win Wednesday evening.
Taking on Battle Creek, Coffee County tied it at 5-5 in the top of the fourth inning before adding three more runs over the game’s remainder on the way to the victory.
The team finished with seven hits, led by Bentley Ater and Tripp Trussler with two each. Mason Floyd, Braxton Swack and Tyler Campbell each had one.
Floyd, Swack and Trussler had one RBI each for a team total of three.
On the mound, Liam Niece went three innings and finished with one strikeout, three hits, five runs and four walks. Kasen Shelton took his place, striking out two more Battle Creek batters until coming off in the bottom of the sixth inning. Swack closed it out for the inning’s remainder to earn the save.
Coffee County (1-0) returns home to host Franklin County at 4:30 p.m. Thursday.
Middle School Softball
Coffee County 4, Oakland 3
The Lady Raiders picked up their second straight win Wednesday, holding off a late push from Oakland in the top of the seventh inning to preserve a one-run home victory.
Coffee County had five hits over the course of the game, led by Amaya Campbell with two. Britlyn Jones, Addie Haley and Brinley Bennett each had one.
The Lady Raiders also finished the night with four RBI.
Campbell went the distance in the circle, coming away with six strikeouts, nine hits and three runs across all seven innings.
Coffee County (2-0) remains at home to host Franklin County at 5 p.m. Thursday.
