County discusses live Christmas tree for courthouse lawn

Members of the Coffee County Health, Welfare and Recreation Committee discussed during the Oct. 30 meeting planting sometime in the future a large evergreen tree on the Courthouse lawn.

HWR Chairman Jimmy Hollandsworth said it would be too late for the addition this year.

Commissioner Tim Morris added that there would not be time to have all the unground power lines mapped out.

Morris said that a balled tree to be permanently placed on the square would be better than placing a temporary system similar to the one at the state capital.

One stipulation of the tree is that it would have to be far enough away from the Courthouse so that it would not shed or damage the historic building.

He suggested using a slow-growing tree like a blue spruce.

Hollandsworth said that over the years, dead trees have been harvested from there, but none have been planted there.

HWR recommended contributing $3,500 from the Tourism Fund to go to the Christmas lights and decorations at the Courthouse.

Hollandsworth said his understating is that the city will expand this year’s Christmas decorations to include the east and west sides of the courthouse.
