CCMS softball claims Area Championship

The Coffee Middle Lady Raiders completed their run as a No. 5 seed in the Area Tournament on Thursday night, beating the EO Coffman Lady Panthers 16-4 to claim the Area 6 crown.

Before the Championship Game

The CCMS Lady Raiders entered the AA Area 6 Tournament as the No. 5 seed, finishing the regular season with an 8-9 overall record.

In the first round on April 28, the Lady Raiders shutout the No. 4 seed Franklin County Rebelettes with a 9-0 victory, where Kalli Byers and Genna Sadler each collected two RBIs and Briley Jernigan pitched all seven innings and picked up nine strikeouts.

The Lady Raiders advanced to the semifinals on April 29, where the No. 1 seeded Warren County Lady Pioneers were waiting. Despite facing an early 3-0 deficit, the Lady Raiders came back and won the game 7-4, clinching not only a spot in the Area Championship game against No. 2 seed EO COffman, but also a spot in the Section 2 Tournament.

The Lady Raiders immediately made a statement at the start of the Area Championship, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning. McKenzie Shelton scored one of those runs on a single by Kalli Byers, then Byers scored after the Panthers loaded up the bases and walked Maggie Bailey. Genna Sadler would make it a 3-0 ball game on a grounder by Anna Belle Mullins.

EO Coffman got on the board in the bottom of the second inning, but the Lady Raiders scored eight runs combined over the next three innings to mount a double digit lead, 11-1.

The Lady Panthers made the score 11-2 in the bottom of the fifth, then in the top of the sixth inning, the offensive onslaught continued for the Lady Raiders. Coffee County scored a total of five times in the top half of the sixth, with three of those runs being batted in by a Briley Jernigan double.

EO Coffman scored twice in the bottom of the sixth inning to do a little bit of damage control, but the Lady Raiders held on for a 16-4 victory.

Maggie Bailey and Briley Jernigan each finished the game with three RBIs and Jernigan collected her fifth win in the circle in as many games.

Up Next: The CCMS Lady Raiders will now advance to the AA Section 2 Tournament as the No. 1 seed from Area 6. The Sectional Tournament will begin on May 5 and will take place at Mill Creek Middle School.
