Inmates riot at Coffee County Jail

Following an incident on April 14, at the Coffee County Jail seven inmates are being named for alleged participation in disturbance in the “BA” housing unit of the jail.

According to a report by Sheriff Chad Partin, seven inmates made their way to the top of the janitor closet inside the day room. These inmates allegedly then were involved in the disturbance.

The Jail notified the sheriff at about 4 p.m. and he arrived shortly after. He then attempted to communicate with the inmates as to what the issue was. These inmates refused to comply with the direction of the jail staff and the sheriff.

Partin said less lethal options were used in an attempt to gain compliance with directions to get down which met with one inmate coming down from the elevated position.

At this point, short bursts with a fire hose were utilized to gain compliance from the remaining inmates. And all the remaining inmates came down on their own accord.

No criminal charges will be filed against the inmates related to this incident. However, internal disciplinary actions regarding the actions of the inmate could be forthcoming.

Inmates named were Dakota E. Newsom charged with Manufacture, Sale, Delivery, Possession of Methamphetamine, Domestic Assault, Violation of two counts of Probation, two counts of Assault and court order;  Nicholas D Beasley charged with DUI, Simple Possession, Driving on Revoked/Suspended, Contraband in a Penal Institution, Possession of a Weapon, Domestic Violence, Assault, Theft of Property, Burglary; Frederick C. Williams charged with Driving on Revoked/Suspended, Misuse of Registration, Unlawful Drug Paraphernalia, three counts of Aggravated Assault, two counts Unlawful Carrying of a Weapon, Evading Arrest, Manufacture, Sale, Delivery, Possession of Methamphetamine, three counts of Failure to Appear, Possession of a Weapon by a Convicted Felon, and two counts of Contraband in a Penal Institution; Shane A Cargile charged with two counts of Theft of Property, Evading Arrest, Reckless Driving, four counts of Assault, Aggravated Assault, Escape; Christopher M Cox charged with two counts Domestic Violence, Interfere with Emergency Calls, three counts of Violation of Probation, Failure to Appear, Murder 2nd Degree, and two counts Aggravated Assault; James G Lyon II charged with Unlawful Carrying or Possession of a Weapon, Murder/Reckless Homicide, Violation of Probation, two counts of Assault on First Responder and Anthony A Lyons charged with Attempted 1st degree Murder, two counts Aggravated Kidnapping, Manufacturing, Sale, Delivery, Possession of Methamphetamine, Resisting Arrest, Violation of Probation, Assault and  Contraband in a Penal Institution.

Coffee County Sheriff Chad Partin announce a preliminary report April 14 that a small riot had occurred at Coffee County Jail. 

Partin said that the riot consisted of seven inmates in B section of the jail. These inmates were incarcerated on charges from felony theft to murder. 

“We had to use many tools in the toolbox, including the  fire department,” Partin said, referring to the efforts to maintain order in the cellblock. 

Coffee County Sheriff’s Department is currently investigating the the cause of the riot and more information and the names of the inmates involved is forthcoming. 

No one was injured in the incident, Partin said.
