Jennings places first at Regionals, four CCHS wrestlers qualify for State

Over the weekend, a total of four wrestlers from Coffee County punched their ticket to the TSSAA State Championships, including Ellysia Jennings, who placed first in the 185-pound weight class in the Region 2 Championships.

Girls Region 2 Tournament

On Friday, Feb. 14, Coffee County had three wrestlers place in the girls Region 2 Championships at Cleveland High School.

Ellysia Jennings placed first in the 185-pound division after defeating Kamari Matthews of East Ridge in a 7-2 decision in the championship match, Jasmine Norris placed third in the 120-pound division with a by a fall over Charity Haven of Polk County in the third place match and Jianna Bare placed third in the 145-pound division after beating Ellie Turner of York in a 16-0 technical fall in the third place match.

Jennings, Norris and Bare will each advance to the State Championships next week.

Sophia Rodriguez (100) and Aime Miller (132) also wrestled in the Region 2 Tournament, but each ended their tournaments in the third round of the consolation bracket of their respective weight classes.

Boys AA Section 2 Tournament

In the boys Section 2 Tournament on Saturday, Feb. 15 at McMinn County High School, the Red Raiders had four wrestlers entered, but only one would advance to the State Championships.

Aiden Lindsay, wrestling in the 126-pound division, went on to place second after losing to Colt Maughon of Cleveland in the championship match by a 15-0 technical fall.

With his second place finish, Lindsay qualified himself for the boys Class AA State Championships next week in Franklin.

Here’s how the other three wrestlers for Coffee County finished in the Section Tournament:

144 – William Barlow lost to Matt Campos (Walker Valley) (Dec 10-0) in Consolation Round 1

150 – Eli McLean lost to Patrick Richardson (Stewarts Creek) (Dec 9-6) in Consolation Semis

215 – Joel Cruz-Martinez lost to Troy Dyszkiewicz (Walker Valley) (TF 16-0) in Consolation Semis

The TSSAA State Wrestling Championships will take place on Friday and Saturday, Feb. 21-22 at the Williamson County Ag-Exposition Arena in Franklin.
