County mayor to propose 90-day moratorium for subdivisions

Coffee County Mayor Dennis Hunt issued a press release Saturday, Feb. 22, where he announced he would present to the Coffee County Planning Commission a 90-day moratorium on all major subdivision plat reviews.
Per the press release, Hunt will present his proposal to the Planning Commission during its February meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 25. He added the moratorium proposal will then be presented to the Coffee County Full Commission during its March 11 meeting “regardless of the Planning Commission’s recommendation.”
“The rural residents of Coffee County have legitimate concerns that they are not adequately represented in the current approval processes for major subdivisions in the Rural Area District of Coffee County,” Hunt said. “The prerequisites and specific minimum requirements for major subdivisions in these areas should be reviewed and necessary changes made, if deemed necessary.”
He added any proposed changes recommended by the Planning Commission will then need to be voted on by the elected representatives from the rural areas of Coffee County.
“Recent events regarding these large scale developments have left too many voters in Coffee County with the feeling of being disenfranchised in the approval process,” Hunt said.
The meeting for the Coffee County Regional Planning Commission will take place at the Coffee County Administrative Plaza on Tuesday, Feb. 25, in Conference Room 1 at 4 p.m.
