The Coffee Middle Lady Raiders turned in another impressive performance on defense with a 38-21 win over the Lady Rockets while the Red Raiders ran away with a 49-27 win over the Rockets at Joe Frank Patch Memorial Gymnasium on Friday night.

CCMS Lady Raiders Vs Westwood Lady Rockets

Coffee County had the edge in the first quarter, outscoring Westwood 9-4 with the help of their press defense.

The Lady Raiders continued their dominant play on defense in the second quarter, allowing just two free throws by Amelia Johnson while scoring 16 to pile up a halftime lead of 25-6.

Westwood began to chip away in the third, outscoring the Lady Raiders 10-4, but Coffee still led 29-16 heading into the fourth.

Coffee County would not waver in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Lady Rockets 9-5 to seal a 38-21 win.

“That was another great defensive performance by our girls, especially in that first half,” said Lady Raider Coach David Vinson. “Westwood has a good team. I told my girls that they wouldn’t quit, and they didn’t quit. They’re probably the best team we’ve played so far, and it was a good non-conference win for us.”

“We had a very tough start to the ball game,” said Lady Rocket Coach Shala Ferrell. “I was proud of my girls’ effort in the third and fourth quarters and I feel like they looked much more like a ‘team’ in the second half. Coffee County’s defense anticipates the next pass very well, and Coach Vinson does a good job coaching them on that. They’re a good team and I’m hoping that we can close that gap for our second game.”

The Coffee Middle Lady Raiders improve to 4-0 on the season while the Westwood Lady Rockets fall to 5-2.

Box Score: CCMS Lady Raiders (38) Jenslee Nogodula 10, Avery Pruitt 10, Harper Crosslin 8, Kinsley Pruitt 6, Brylyn McAdams 4.

Westwood Lady Rockets (21) Jerzee Ferrell 8, Amelia Johnson 4, Zallona Dillard 3, Maci Jackson 2, Mia Ahlijah 2, MaKenzie Meacham 2.

The Lady Raiders also picked up a win in the junior varsity game.

CCMS Red Raiders Vs Westwood Rockets

Both teams were locked in right from the start, as the first quarter ended with the score tied 6-6.

Westwood found an edge in the second quarter, outscoring the Red Raiders 11-10 to put themselves ahead at halftime 17-16.

Coffee County came fighting back in the third, holding the Rockets to just two points while scoring 14 to take a 30-19 lead into the fourth quarter.

The Red Raiders would add to their lead in the fourth, outscoring Westwood 19-8 to cap off a 49-27 win.

“In the first half, I didn’t like our team’s effort too much,” said Red Raider Coach Jason Creek. “I don’t know what is about our team and the first half, it seems like we come out much stronger in the second half. I can’t say that we made a ton of adjustments necessarily, but they played a lot stronger. I was proud of their effort and so was the rest of the coaching staff.”

“We did what we were supposed to in the first half, but in the second half, we came out flat,” said Rockets Coach Anita Gannon. “Our shooting and our rebounding kinda fell flat and we just couldn’t overcome that. They’ll get better though, and that’s all that matters.”

The Red Raiders improve their season record to 3-1 while the Rockets fall to 4-3.

Box Score: CCMS Red Raiders (49) Jo Jordan 21, Jaxon Pruitt 21, Rylan Abellana 5, Hyatt Moss 2.

Westwood Rockets (27) Isiah Buchanan 10, Kingslee Miller 6, Trenton Tanner 4, Brock Christian 3, Luke Christian 2, Levi Jordan 2.

Coffee County Middle will travel to Warren County for their next contest and Westwood will be back at home against Community. Both games will be on Monday, Nov. 4 with varsity action starting at 6 p.m.

Coffee County and Westwood will meet again on Tuesday, Nov. 12 at Coffee County Central High School.
