Red Raiders outpace Wolverines

The Coffee County Red Raiders won their second game in as many nights after a 12-2 blowout win over LaVergne on Tuesday night at Riverdale High School.

Coffee County set the pace at the start, scoring the first run in the top of the first after a Blake Hillis single sent Nate Rutledge in for a score.

The Red Raiders would add three more runs to their lead in the second inning, with Trey Turner scoring on a passed ball, Austin Gipson scoring on a Rutledge single and Rutledge scoring on a Cole Pippenger single as the Red Raiders led 4-0 through the first two innings.

The Wolverines would get on the scoreboard in the bottom of the third to make the score 4-1, where it would stay through the fourth inning.

However, the Red Raiders exploded for eight runs in the fifth inning, as Cole Pippenger, Blake Hillis, Colter Neel, Brendon Sheppard and Trey Turner all scored, and Pippenger added three more on a home run that also sent Davis McKenzie and Nate Rutledge home for a score to give Coffee County a 12-1 lead. 

LaVergne would add another run to their score in the fifth inning to make it 12-2, but the Red Raiders held on to win.

The Red Raiders also outhit the Wolverines 10-7 as Pippenger had two hits and four RBIs, Rutledge had two hits and two RBIs, Hillis had two hits and an RBI, Turner had two hits and Neel and Sheppard each had one hit and an RBI.

Brady Daugherty would get the win on the mound, pitching four innings and allowing one run on six hits and striking out six batters on 58 pitches.

Beau Murray would pitch an inning in relief, allowing one run on one hit and striking out two batters on 17 pitches.

The Red Raiders are now 2-2 on the young season and will continue their road slate in Murfreesboro at Middle Tennessee Christian School on Thursday, March 14 at 7:00 pm.
