Man charged with murder for overdose death

AChattanooga man has been indicted on second-degree murder charges after investigators say he was the drug dealer who sold fentanyl to a man who overdosed.

The suspect, Steven Todd Moore, who has local ties to Coffee County, was arraigned in circuit court this past month on charges of second-degree murder and sale of drugs.

According to Investigator Austin Qualls of the Coffee County Special Investigations Unit, the charge comes following the death of Hunter Perry, 26, on May 5, 2025.

“He was the drug dealer,” Qualls said, describing Moore as the person lawmen believe supplied Perry with the lethal dose of fentanyl.

Shortly after the overdose death, an undercover drug deal was set up in partnership with Hamilton County law enforcement, and Moore was busted and taken into custody. Qualls recalled Moore had fentanyl and cocaine when he was arrested.

The murder charges came after an autopsy was conducted on the victim, and a review of the death was conducted by the district attorney.

The charge of second- degree murder carries a sentence between 15-40 years in prison, depending on the suspect’s prior record and offender level.
