The Coffee County Sheriff’s Department is investigating an incident that took place near Barton Springs at Normandy Reservoir on July 4, involving an armed man who allegedly made racial remarks to a family then discharged firearms nearby.
According to Chief Deputy Frank Watkins, the department is still looking into it trying to find the suspect.
The suspect is described as a white male in his 50s wearing a black “veteran” cap, black shirt and shorts driving a green or camo Kawasaki side by side.
The subject was in possession of a shotgun and making racial remarks to people in the area.
“Deputies looked in the area for quite a while with no results finding him,” Watkins said.
Local woman Nicole Rayas called the incident scary and horrible. She said that an individual approached her group who were picnicking and swimming at the lake and told the group they needed to return to Mexico.
According to Rayas, the man after tense confrontation, went into the nearby woods and discharged a shotgun and a pistol, before leaving the area.
