Coffee County’s losing streak reaches seven games
Friday the 13th proved to be scary for the Red Raiders as they racked up another loss in Murfreesboro to the monster that is the Oakland Patriots.
The Red Raiders dug themselves a pretty deep hole early on, as Oakland went 70 yards in three plays to go up 7-0, just 47 seconds into the ballgame.
Coffee’s first possession of the game would be a three-and-out, and the Patriots would score again on their next drive to make it 14-0 midway through the first quarter.
The Red Raiders showed some signs of life later in the first quarter. On their next drive, Coffee went six plays for 37 yards before having to punt, putting the Patriots back at their own 10-yard line.
The Coffee County defense managed to force an Oakland three-and-out, stifling the Patriots to just two yards on the drive.
The Red Raiders again went to work on offense in the second quarter, but after seven plays, they fumbled the ball, giving it back to the Oakland offense. The Patriots would score again to make it 21-0.
The Red Raiders last drive of the half would be their longest of the game, as they knocked off over four minutes of game clock. The drive would end after a failed 4th down conversion at the Oakland 43 yard line. Oakland would keep the ball until halftime, still up 21-0
The Red Raiders would receive the ball to start the third quarter but would give it up quickly after another three-and out. The next Patriot possession ended in another touchdown, 28-0.
Coffee County would fail to get a first down for the rest of the game, and the Patriots would capitalize, scoring again with 2:32 left in the third quarter, making it 35-0 and the start of the running clock.
The Patriots would score one more time in the fourth quarter, and the game would end in a 42-0 loss for the Red Raiders.
After the game, coach Roger Haynes didn’t mince words about his team’s performance. “It was bad”, he said, “I think the ‘O’ on the side of their helmets beat us before we got here…we weren’t ready to play.”
QB John Massengill went 3 for 7 for 24 yards passing, RB Deontae Short had 32 yards rushing and RB Caiden Martin had 23 yards rushing for the Red Raiders.
