Westwood Rockets win DRVC Title

On Saturday at Eagleville High School, the Westwood Rockets defeated the Community Vikings, 54-47 to win the Duck River Valley Conference Championship.

The Rockets would score four unanswered points at the start of the first quarter before leading the Vikings 8-6 heading into the second.

Scoring picked up in the second quarter with Westwood outscoring Community 14-9 to take a 22-15 halftime lead. 

Westwood extended the lead, outscoring Community 18-13 in the third quarter to lead 40-28 heading into the fourth.

The Rockets would lead by as much as 21 points in the fourth quarter before winning the game, 54-47 and winning the DRVC Championship.

“It feels wonderful,” said Coach Anita Gannon. “This is my third year coaching this group of eighth graders who were in sixth grade when I first started coaching them, and I’ve been trying to build them up to where they need to be. It’s amazing.”

“It’s awesome,” said Mason Troxler. “This is what we’ve been working for all season. Everybody has shown great hustle this season and everybody did their part.”

“It feels great,” said Caleb Hill. “We’ve built a great trust with each other and have worked really hard for this.”

“I’ve been playing for three years and we hadn’t won anything before now,” said Zeke Jones. “It’s been runner-up after runner-up finish, and it gave us a great desire to win this.”

Scoring for the Rockets in the Championship Game were Mason Troxler with 20 points, Brady Christian with 14 points, Isaiah Buchanan with seven points, Caleb Hill with six points, Zeke Jones with five points and Kaden Ingle with two points.

Several Westwood players would also be awarded for their efforts in conference and tournament play.

Caleb Hill, Zeke Jones and Mason Troxler would take home All-Conference awards and Brady Christian, along with Jones and Troxler would be named to the All-Tournament Team.

Westwood continues its season with a game at Tullahoma West on Monday, Dec. 18.
