Red Raiders lose district battle with Columbia

On Monday night, the CCCHS Red Raiders lost 7-5 in a tight district game with the Columbia Central Lions at Powers Field.

Columbia raced out to an early lead, scoring three runs in the top of the first inning, including a two-run home run. The Lions would score once more in the top of the second inning to lead 4-0 through the first two innings.

The Red Raiders would score twice in the bottom of the second inning, as Davis McKenzie scored on a double by Cole Pippenger and Pippenger scored on a single by Bird Fellers to cut the lead in half, 4-2.

The Lions would score twice in the top of the fourth inning to extend their lead to 6-2.

Coffee County would trim the lead in the bottom of the fourth, with Nate Rutledge batting in two runs with a single and Rutledge scoring himself on a grounder by Brady Daugherty to make the score 6-5, but the lions would hold service the rest of the way, scoring another run in the top of the sixth inning and holding on for the 7-5 win.

Cole Pippenger would have two hits and one RBI, Nate Rutledge had one hit and two RBIs and Bird Fellers, Colter Neel and Blake Hillis each registered one hit for the Red Raiders.

Timothy Henderson would get the start on the mound and be credited with the loss after pitching 3.2 innings, allowing six runs on eight hits, striking out two batters and walking two on 70 pitches. Isaiah Deadman would pitch 2.1 innings, allowing one run on four hits, striking out three batters and walking two on 47 pitches, with Brady Daugherty and Nate Rutledge also making a relief appearance.

The Red Raiders are now 12-14-1 on the season with a 4-5 record in district play as they head to Columbia for the second game of the series on Tuesday, Apr. 23 at 6:30 pm.
