Red Raider Football hosts Red and White Game

On Thursday night, the CCCHS Football Team played an intrasquad scrimmage at Carden-Jarrell Field with the White Team picking up a 13-12 win over the Red Team.
The Red Team was made up of the offensive players, the White Team was the defensive side and points were given based on the type of plays made on the field.
“We wanted to give both sides an opportunity to score,” said Coach Roger Haynes. “We gave the offense points for every run that went 15 yards, every pass that went over 20 yards, gaining three consecutive first downs and of course, touchdowns. From a defensive standpoint, we gave them points for getting off the field on third down and forcing three-and-outs, turnovers and sacks because those things are important for a defense to be successful.”
The scrimmage was also a good way for the coaching staff to get a feel for how the team is shaping up and where they need to improve over the next two months.
“We wanted to see who all was willing to compete, learn their responsibilities and do their job,” said Haynes. “It was important to know which kids we are going to have on either side of the ball and zero in on what they need to work on over the summer.”
Coffee County lost some key players over the summer who are going on to play college football, including the likes of Xavier Holland, Blayne Myers, Xavier Randolph and Javon Simmons. Even with those key names gone from the roster, the Red Raider remain mostly unchanged on the defensive side of the football.
“There were a lot of young guys who got reps tonight and we’ll spend a lot of time watching film and seeing how they performed in a game situation. Some of them aren’t ready yet and we have some move-ins that are coming in June and hopefully they’ll be able to help us in some key spots. Defensively, we lost Blayne at defensive end and two of our outside linebackers, but everybody else is pretty much back. We had 13 players that didn’t dress tonight and a couple of them were out due to injury or sickness. Once we get everybody back good and healthy, I think our team will have great depth.”
