County officials take oath of office

Newly elected Coffee County Mayor Dennis Hunt and County Commissioner Dowe Langford Jones took the oath of office Sept. 3 following being elected in the Aug. 2 election.
Hunt was joined by his wife Chris as he took the oath at the Coffee County Administrative Plaza. Hunt began serving as Coffee County Mayor following the death of former County Mayor Judd Matheney last April. He then went on to win his own term during the recent election.
Jones follows in the footsteps of both her late husband Benny Jones and daughter Holly Jones as Coffee County Commissioners.
“Two years and two days ago we were here to witness the swearing in of my husband Benny Jones who sat in the District 1 commission seat,” Jones said. “Two years have brought along a lot of things, my husband received a higher calling, my daughter, Holly, was appointed to complete the last two years of that term … and now I have elected to complete his seat. For that I thank the voters.”
Benny Jones died Oct. 24, 2022 after being elected in August of 2022. Holly Jones was appointed by the County Commission to fill his seat until the next county election, which was held Aug. 2.
Dowe Jones will serve the remainder of her husband’s four-year term.
