On Tuesday night, Coffee County Middle and Westwood met for the second and final time this season with the Lady Raiders picking up a dominant 48-20 victory over the Lady Rockets and the Red Raiders scraping past the Rockets 50-38.
CCMS Lady Raiders Vs Westwood Lady Rockets
The Lady Raiders raced out to a fast start, shutting out the Lady Rockets 13-0 in the first quarter.
Westwood tried to battle back in the second quarter, but Coffee County still outscored them 12-8 to take a 25-8 lead into the half.
Coffee County would continue to outpace the Lady Rockets in the second half, outscoring them 14-10 in the third and 9-2 in the fourth to win the game 48-20.
“I’m starting to sound like a broken record now, but we live off of our defense and we did that again tonight,” said Lady Raider Coach David Vinson. “Our girls are always ready to play, and we scored a lot in transition from our defense. It’s hard to play back-to-back games, I know Westwood played back-to-back games as well, but I was very proud of our team and I think that may have been the most complete game we’ve played all year.”
“We were just not prepared offensively,” said Lady Rocket Coach Shala Ferrell. “When you have as many turnovers as we have, it’s hard to score points and it’s hard to win a ball game. I wasn’t too upset with our defensive effort tonight, but offensively, we just have to take better care of the basketball.”
The Lady Raiders improve to 8-0 on the season while the Lady Rockets fall to 7-4.
Box Score: Westwood Lady Rockets (20) Zallona Dillard 4, Jerzee Ferrell 4, Carter Trail 3, Maci Jackson 3, Amelia Johnson 3, Lexxi Van Zandbergen 2, Allee Willmore 1.
Coffee County Lady Raiders (48) Jenslee Nogodula 16, Avery Pruitt 11, Kinsley Pruitt 9, Brylyn McAdams 5, Kealy Branch 3, Abbey Williams 2, Brooklyn Carlton 2.
CCMS Red Raiders Vs Westwood Rockets
The Red Raiders controlled the game at the start, edging in front of Westwood 23-17 in the first half of play.
The battle continued on into the second half, where the Red Raiders outscored the Rockets 11-9 in the third quarter and 16-12 in the fourth to cap off a 50-38 victory.
“Defensively we tried a few different things and we kept having to change some things up,” said Red Raider Coach Jason Creek. “They (Westwood) dominated on the offensive rebounds. When we were in our 1-3-1, we just got killed on the glass. The boys kept battling, we knew that the second time we played Westwood it wasn’t going to be easy, and I thought for the most part we did what we needed to do to take care of business.”
“I think we could have done a better job of rebounding and keeping their bigs off of the boards more,” said Rockets Coach Anita Gannon. “If we could’ve kept them outside and not let them get inside of us on defense, we wouldn’t have had to worry too much. We’re getting better as a team and that is the main goal, especially in conference play. We just need to go out and be ready to work on our offensive sets, setting screens and getting our shooters open, and as we get better with that, we’ll win more ball games.”
The Red Raiders improve their season record to 7-1 after picking up their seventh straight win while the Rockets fall to 5-6.
Box Score: Westwood Rockets (38) Isaiah Buchanan 13, Kingslee Miller 11, Trenton Tanner 10, Brock Christian 3, Levi Jordan 1.
Coffee County Red Raiders (50) Jaxon Pruitt 22, Jo Jordan 12, Ethan Arnold 7, Kanon Creek 5, Rylan Abellana 4.
Coffee County Middle and Westwood will both be back on the basketball court on Thursday, Nov. 14 with Coffee County traveling to Cannon County and Westwood playing host to Forrest.
