High school sports roundup: Tuesday, April 8

S

The Red Raider soccer and Lady Raider softball teams each collected home shutout wins over district opponents on what was a busy Tuesday for CCCHS athletics.

CCCHS Baseball @ Spring Hill

The Red Raiders compiled a 7-2 lead through five and a half innings, but Spring Hill scored six runs in the bottom of the sixth to hand the Red Raiders their third straight loss and their third defeat in district play.

Both teams reached home plate only once through the first four innings, then the Red Raiders opened the taps with four runs in the top of the fifth, including two runs on a single by Colter Neel.

Entering the bottom of the sixth inning, the Red Raiders curated a 7-2 advantage, but Spring Hill would not go away quietly. Despite grounding out on their first hit of the period, the host Raiders knocked in four runs on a pair of doubles and one single to cut the Red Raider lead down to 7-6.

Starter Cole Pippenger would be pulled after over five innings of work in his fifth start of the season, and Leiton Yancer would be called upon to finish things off on the mound. Yancer would strike out his first batter of the night and gain a second out for Coffee County but the next batter, Gary Cox, hit a two-run bomb to left field, putting Spring Hill on top 8-7 in what would be the game-deciding play.

The Red Raiders were unable to respond in the top of the seventh, suffering their third straight loss and putting their overall record to 11-8 on the season.

Coffee County will get another crack at Spring Hill, this time at home on Wednesday, April 9 at 6:30 p.m. in a game that was originally slated for Monday, April 7, but was moved due to weather.

Jalyn Norman enjoyed a 2-for-2 night at the plate, highlighted by her second home run hit of the season with a solo shot to center field in the bottom of the third inning.

Lily Norman, who leads the team with 13 starts, took the night off from the pitcher’s circle, but still batted in three runs on two hits.

Haleigh Skipper made her first start of the season in the circle, and the junior made the most of the appearance, pitching all six innings and turning away 10 batters.

With the win, the Lady Raiders improved to 16-8 on the season with a 4-1 record in district play and will travel to Green Hill for a non-district matchup on Wednesday, April 9 at 6 p.m.

For the second straight game, the Red Raiders were held to just one first half goal, that being a strike by Junior Petatan.

Seven minutes into the second half, Manny Gonzales doubled the Red Raiders’ lead with a dagger from the right wing side.

Coffee County added some insurance with less than six minutes to go in regulation, as Logan Geddes knocked in a header on a corner kick by Joel Barrara, making the final score 3-0.

The Red Raiders are now 4-0-3 on the season and will take their undefeated record into Shelbyville for a rematch with the Golden Eagles scheduled for Thursday, April 10 at 7 p.m. The two teams drew a 1-1 tie in the previous meeting back on March 13.
