A man faces preliminary hearing for leading lawmen on a high speed chase which ended with him ramming law enforcement vehicles and slashing his own wrist.
The suspect, Pernell James Rollins, 39, is charged with two counts of reckless endangerment – deadly weapon involved, driving with a suspended license, resisting arrest, obedience to police officers, and six counts of assault on a first responder. He will face a preliminary hearing July 7.
The incident began when Coffee County deputies were dispatched to a disturbance. Rollins reportedly drove his vehicle into a deputy’s vehicle when the officer tried to block him from fleeing the scene. The suspect then led lawmen on a high speed pursuit through rural roads, highways and on the interstate, running other cars off the road as he drove on the wrong side of the road and on the shoulders.
Officers were eventually able to hobble his vehicle with spike strips but Rollin continued to try to get away until he hit about law enforcement vehicle. Once stopped, Rollins, who was still inside his vehicle, pulled a knife and slit his arm in an apparent suicide attempt. Officers were able to breach the passenger side window but Rollins continued to put up a fight until his was tased.
