Rockets swarm Yellow Jackets

The Westwood Rockets continued their preseason preparations on Tuesday night with a 26-6 scrimmage win over Grundy County at Dyer-Bouldin Field.

Instead of the typical four-quarter game, each team possessed the ball on offense four times, where they were allowed 10 plays on their first three possessions, regardless of the down and distance. The fourth and final possession is played until a score or turnover on downs.

The visiting Yellow Jackets “received” the ball first and then managed to pick up a first down on their first four plays. A couple of penalties pushed Grundy County back on the next four plays, and Westwood managed to keep the Jackets from gaining a first down. Grundy’s last two plays however, resulted in a total of 20 yards.

Keeping the Yellow Jackets scoreless after the first 10 plays, the Rockets’ offense took over. On their second play from scrimmage, Westwood broke free for a 70-yard rushing touchdown to take a 6-0 lead. After failing a point-after try on play three, the Rockets found the endzone again on play four, this time with a 70-yard pass and good extra point conversion on play five to up their advantage to 13-0.

The Rockets broke through for a 48-yard run on play 6, but threw two interceptions over their last four plays of the series, the second of which culminated in Grundy County’s only six points of the night.

The Yellow Jackets picked up a total of six first downs on their next two series, but Westwood’s defense again kept Grundy from scoring an offensive touchdown.

Westwood scored on another 70-yard pass in their second series for a 20-6 lead, but the Rockets couldn’t gain much more ground on their third series of the night apart from a 50-yard quarterback sweep.

Grundy County would commit a turnover on downs on their final series after gaining only two yards, and Westwood ended the night with a 64-yard rushing touchdown after being penalized back to their own 20 earlier in the series.
