Lady Raiders fall to Oakland in straight sets

Coffee County volleyball came into Wednesday’s home match looking to bounce back from its first loss of the season two nights before.

Hosting Oakland, the Lady Raiders were ultimately denied the opportunity to get back in the win column, falling 3-0 to the Lady Patriots to move to 3-2 on the year.

“We really weren’t prepared for their quickness. I’ll take a little blame on that. I should’ve scouted a little bit better and seen what they had. We’ve got to work on that in practice,” Coffee County coach Jon Spears said. “We just didn’t play our best tonight.”

Coffee County fell in both the first and second sets by scores of 25-15. Looking to extend the match with a win in the third set, the Lady Raiders initially kept right along with Oakland and briefly took the lead early on as well.

Tied at 8-8, the Lady Patriots began to build a little more distance as the set continued from there, eventually sealing the match with a final score of 25-16.

“We don’t give up. Of course against Warren County the other night, we fought back, fought back. We just ran out of steam. We didn’t quit right there. We were coming back on that one,” Spears said. “My girls are tough and they don’t give up.”

Allysa Goon and Morgen Spears led the team in kills with four each. Danni Hillis, Hayleigh Harris and Carrington Saner all followed with three.

Hillis and Andon Selvog each had one ace.

Selvog and Taylor Brinkley both recorded six assists. Spears added two, just ahead of Harris with one.

Spears came away with two blocks.

Jenslee Nogodula led the way in digs with six. Hillis followed with five. Brinkley had two digs to finish just ahead of Harris, Spears, Selvog and Cailey Sturgill with one each.

Coffee County remains at home to host Columbia at 6 p.m. Thursday.
