Late touchdowns sink Raiders in loss to Shelbyville

The 2025 season came to a close for Coffee County football Thursday night.

Traveling to Shelbyville Central for a Region 6-6A matchup, the Red Raiders went into the fourth quarter with the game all tied up before falling behind on the way to a 28-14 loss.

The loss ended Coffee County’s season with a 2-8 overall record and a 1-5 mark in region play, leaving the team in sixth place overall out of seven teams in the region standings.

After Shelbyville came up empty on the game’s first possession, the Red Raiders struck first on their opening drive with a 27-yard touchdown run from Jett Trussler.

The Golden Eagles went on to answer on their next drive, but a missed extra-point attempt kept Coffee County in front 7-6 with 45 seconds left in the first quarter.

Still up by a point midway through the second quarter, the Red Raiders were able to begin a drive around midfield after A.J. Schuster blocked a Shelbyville punt. Coffee County took advantage of the favorable field position, capping it off with a 19-yard run to the end zone from Elijah Vernon with 5:04 left in the first half.

Once again, Shelbyville answered on its following possession, this time scoring from 6 yards out on a run from Torrion Mathis with 2:12 left until halftime. Quarterback Stephen Bobo followed this up with the 2-point conversion to make it a 14-14 game at the break.

Still tied at 14 points apiece in the third quarter, the Red Raiders were able to stop a Golden Eagle drive on their own 19-yard line when Zander Gomez came away with an interception.

Coffee County proceeded to march down to the other end of the field, reaching the Shelbyville 25-yard line by the quarter’s close.

A Shelbyville pick ended the Red Raiders’ possession as the fourth quarter got under way, leading to a drive that reached paydirt on a 10-yard run for Mathis with 6:30 left to play. Mathis went on to add a 2-point conversion to put Coffee County down 22-14.

After the following Red Raider drive came up empty, the Golden Eagles got the ball back and took it to the end zone once again, this time capping off the possession with a 3-yard push from Treyvion Mathis with 3:19 remaining. The ensuing 2-point conversion was unsuccessful this time around, leaving Coffee County trailing 28-14.

The Red Raiders were unable to cut it any closer in the time remaining and finished the game down by 14 to wrap up their season.
