Coffee County swimmers compete at region championship

The Coffee County Central High School swim team dove into the postseason this past Friday. Traveling to Excel Aquatics in Brentwood for the Middle Tennessee High School Swimming Association Regional Championship, multiple Red Raider and Lady Raider swimmers competed across a wide variety of events.
Among those competing in the girls’ events included Jaci Howlett, who took 14th place in the 200-yard freestyle with a finals time of 2:03.48. Howlett went on to add an 18th-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 56.44 seconds. Both of Howlett’s finishes were good enough to earn spots in the Tennessee High School state meet, which will be held at the Centennial Sportsplex in Nashville Feb. 6 and 7.
Additional local girls’ swimmers who competed included Abby Shadden, who placed 26th in the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:29.21. Avory Gilday added a 66th-place finish in the 100-yard freestyle with a time of 1:05.70. Gilday also took 53rd place in the 100-yard backstroke at a time of 1:15.78. Shadden additionally placed 25th in the 100-yard breaststroke with a time of 1:18.22.
On the boys’ side, the 200-yard medley relay team of Raiden Hiles, Aidan Hayes, Jack Stowe and Corban Alvarado finished in 26th place with a finals time of 2:05.24. Alvarado went on to take 41st place in the 200-yard freestyle, finishing at a time of 2:17.95. Stowe added a 22nd-place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 23.58 seconds. Hiles also finished 43rd in the 100-yard butterfly, posting a time of 1:13.59.
The boys’ 200-yard freestyle relay team of Stowe, Hayes, Alvarado and Hiles finished in 26th place with a time of 1:46.43. Hiles placed 60th in the 100-yard backstroke, posting a finals time of 1:14.57.
