PREP ROUNDUP: CHS baseball takes care of Grundy on Senior Night

The Coffee County baseball team closed out the weekend with a series sweep of Grundy County Saturday evening.

Hosting the Yellow Jackets for Senior Night, the Red Raiders trailed 3-1 after the first inning but took control on the way to a 13-4 victory. The win was Coffee County’s third straight.

The Red Raiders finished with 14 hits, led by Landan Abellana with four. Boone Floyd, Isaiah Deadman and Austin Gipson all followed with two hits each. Davis McKenzie, Jaxon Pruitt, Chase Leonard and Matt Moore each had one hit.

Gipson brought in three of Coffee County’s 11 RBI. Floyd added two. McKenzie, Abellana, Pruitt, Leonard, Deadman and Moore all had one RBI each.

Moore began the night on the mound, finishing with three strikeouts, six hits, four runs and three walks until coming off in the top of the fourth inning. McKenzie took his place, striking out four and limiting Grundy County to two walks before being switched out in the top of the fifth. Up next was Gipson, who added one strikeout and one hit through the top of the sixth inning. William Bradford went on to close it out in the top of the seventh, striking out one more batter in this span.

Up next for Coffee County (10-6) is a trip to McMinnville for a Class 4A District 9 matchup against Warren County Monday. First pitch is scheduled for 6 p.m.

High School Softball

Coffee County 8, Carl Sandburg (Orland Park, Ill.) 4

The Lady Raiders closed out their Warrior Classic schedule with a five-inning victory in Murfreesboro Saturday.

Coffee County posted nine hits over the course of the day, with two each for Raelyn Wainwright, Bailey Hale and Lily Norman. Madison Waller, Samantha Johnson and Adalyn Wild all had one hit each.

The team also came away with seven RBI, led by Hale and Waller with two each. Norman, Wild and Yeidy Cruz each had one RBI.

Cruz led it off in the circle, coming out with three strikeouts, six hits, four runs and one walk in four innings. Norman relieved her for the top of the fifth inning, adding one strikeout and one hit before the game’s conclusion.

Coffee County (7-8) resumes Class 4A District 9 play on the road against Cookeville at 7 p.m. Monday night.

Lady Raiders split Friday Warrior Classic schedule

Coffee County softball was back in Murfreesboro for a pair of tournament games against Booneville (Booneville, Ind.) and Kankakee Valley (Wheatfield Township, Ind.) Friday.

Opening the day against Booneville, the Lady Raiders took an early lead on the way to a 9-1, five-inning victory. They were unable to follow this up against Kankakee Valley, falling 7-1 in six innings to close out the day.

Against Booneville, Coffee County connected on 10 hits, with two each for Norman, Waller and Hale. Wainwright, Cara Newlin, Haleigh Skipper and Maddi Scott each had one hit.

Waller was credited with two of the Lady Raiders’ seven RBI. Norman, Skipper, Wainwright, Scott and Hale had one RBI each.

Norman pitched all five innings, striking out nine and holding Booneville to four hits, one run and three walks.

Coffee County finished with five hits against Kankakee Valley, led by Cruz with two. Wainwright, Waller and Taylor McBride had one hit each.

Waller had the team’s lone RBI.

Skipper pitched the first four innings, striking out two and giving up eight hits, four runs and two walks. Cruz closed it out, adding four strikeouts, two hits, three runs and one walk over the last two innings.

High School Boys’ Soccer

CHS goes 0-3 at Smoky Mountain Cup

 The Coffee County boys’ soccer team traveled to Gatlinburg for a trio of tournament matches over the weekend.

The Red Raiders fell in all three contests, starting with a 2-0 loss to Cane Ridge Thursday. They went on to fall 2-1 to Mount Vernon (Atlanta) Friday, before falling 5-0 to Halls Saturday.

Coffee County (1-4) returns to Class 3A District 9 play with a road match against Lincoln County at 7 p.m. Tuesday.
