Teen fearing deportation flees law
A teen who feared deportation has been bound to the grand jury for allegedly leading lawmen on a high speed pursuit earlier this year.
The suspect, Axel Israel Martinez-Martinez, 19, waived his right to a preliminary hearing on charges of reckless endangerment, child endangerment and evading arrest and had his case bound over the Coffee County grand jury.
The charges come after Martinez allegedly led Coffee County officers on a 22-mile chase this past February. Lawmen tried to pull him over for reckless driving on Hillsboro Boulevard but the suspect reportedly hit the gas and the chase was on.
“He took off at a high rate of speed, reaching speeds up to 95 miles per hour,” the warrant reads. “He continued to flee from deputies for approximately 22 miles was driving recklessly, nearly striking several other vehicles.”
The warrant added that Martinez had his little brother in the car with him at the time. The pursuit was terminated at miles marker 96 after the suspect continued into Rutherford County. The suspect was later caught on Epps Mill Road, still sitting in the driver’s seat. When questioned, Martinez revealed why he was running.
“He said he fled because he was afraid to go to jail due to pending charges and his immigration status,” the warrant reads.
Should the grand jury indict, Martinez would then go before the Circuit Court for trial or disposition of his case.
