Raiders dominate Grundy, fall to Columbia

The Coffee County baseball team needed just four innings to return home from Coalmont with a win Thursday.

Taking on Grundy County, the Red Raiders opened the game with 13 runs in the top of the first inning on the way to a 25-3 thrashing of the Yellow Jackets.

Coffee County posted 22 RBI over the course of the game, led by Jaxon Pruitt with five. Elijah Vernon and Matt Moore followed with three each. Landan Abellana, Boone Floyd and Grayson Sadler each added two RBI. Ethan McKenzie, Davis Keith, Chase Leonard, Austin Gipson and Isaiah Deadman all had one RBI each.

Abellana came away with three of the team’s 11 hits. Pruitt and Davis McKenzie both connected on two hits each. Floyd, Vernon, Moore and Preston Steele each had one hit.

Xander Meeks held it down on the mound the entire game, striking out eight and ending Grundy County’s night with two hits, three runs and two walks.

Raiders drop two against Columbia For the second time in as many days, Coffee County faced off against Columbia Central last Tuesday evening.

Taking on the Lions at home this time around, the Red Raiders once again fell 4-2 to their Class 4A District 9 foe to fall to 7-6 overall and 0-2 in district play.

Coffee County finished the game with five hits, led by Davis McKenzie with two. Steele, Vernon and Sadler all had one hit each.

Abellana and Davis Mc-Kenzie each had one RBI for a team total of two.

Deadman pitched the first six innings, coming off with five strikeouts, four hits, three runs and four walks. Kasen Shores followed for the seventh inning, adding one strikeout, three hits and one run in this span.

The day before, Coffee County opened the game up with a 2-1 lead over Columbia in the top of the second inning. The Red Raiders went on to give up three runs in the bottom of the third on the way to a 4-2, Monday evening road loss.

Coffee County finished with seven hits, led by Pruitt with two. Steele, Abellana, Sadler, Davis McKenzie and Carter Bell all had one hit each.

Pruitt came away with both of the team’s two RBI.

Floyd got it started on the mound, coming off with two strikeouts, four hits, four runs and two walks after three innings. Gipson went on to close it out, adding three strikeouts, one hit and one walk.

CHS breaks off late, beats Franklin County Coffee County got back in the win column last Saturday.

Traveling to Winchester to take on Franklin County, the Red Raiders broke a 2-2 tie with five runs in the top of the seventh inning on the way to a 7-2 victory over the Rebels.

Coffee County finished the game with nine hits, with two each for Steele, Sadler and Moore. Vernon, Floyd and Abellana each had one hit. This included one home run for Abellana in the top of the second inning and one for Steele in the top of the sixth. Steele came away with three of the team’s seven RBI. Moore followed with two. Abellana and Sadler had one RBI each.

Leiton Yancer pitched a complete game, striking out six and holding Franklin County to two hits, two runs and three walks.

Bottom-seventh comeback dooms Raiders in loss to Tullahoma Coffee County’s six -game winning streak came to an end in Tullahoma last Friday.

Taking on the Wildcats, the Red Raiders jumped ahead early but gave up a trio of runs in the bottom of the seventh inning to seal a 3-2 loss to their crosscounty rival. Coffee County got on the board in the top of the first inning, starting with Gipson scoring on a passed ball during the third at-bat of the game. Abellana came to the plate not long after and connected on a ground ball single, bringing home Carter Bell from third base to make it a 2-0 Red Raider lead.

With Coffee County still up by two by the bottom of the seventh inning, a triple for Tullahoma got the Wildcats on the board to start things off. Brycen Campbell came to the plate for Tullahoma on the next at-bat and proceeded to reach second base on a ground ball error, bringing in the tying run in the process.

After a sacrifice bunt got Campbell to third base shortly after, Parke Fulks singled on a fly ball to center field to bring in Campbell and hand the Red Raiders a walk-off loss.

Abellana finished the game with two of Coffee County’s four hits. Steele and Sadler had two hits each. Abellana also had the team’s lone RBI.

Davis McKenzie took the loss on the mound, finishing with five strikeouts, six hits, three runs and three walks over the course of the game.
