Raiders hold off Warren for district victory

Coffee County completed a regular-season series sweep of its district rival last Tuesday evening.

One day after defeating Warren County in Mc-Minnville Monday night, the Red Raiders took care of business in Manchester this time around, stopping a late Pioneer push to win 6-5.

Coffee County got on the board in the bottom of the first inning when Davis McKenzie ran home from third base on a Boone Floyd line drive. Warren County answered with the tying run in the top of the second, but the Red Raiders did not let it stay at a 1-1 game for long.

In the bottom of the inning, Landan Abellana came to the plate with one out and the bases loaded. Abellana went on to slam a fly ball out to left field for a double, bringing home Sadler, Austin Gipson and Moore in the process to put Coffee County up 4-1.

The Pioneers slowly cut back into it from there, adding one run each in the top of the third inning and the top of the fifth inning.

With their lead sitting at 4-3 heading into the bottom of the sixth, the Red Raiders got it going at the plate with a pair of singles from Moore and McKenzie. Up next in the order was Abellana, who connected on a ground ball to get Moore and McKenzie home and put Coffee County back up by three.

Warren County was not finished yet, scoring two runs in the top of the seventh with two outs. With the tying run on base and the go-ahead run at the plate, pitcher Leiton Yancer delivered the game-winning strikeout to preserve the Red Raider victory.

McKenzie, Abellana, Floyd, Moore and Elijah Vernon each had one hit for a team total of five.

Abellana brought in five of the team’s six RBI, with Floyd adding one.
