CHS soccer falls, CCMS softball wins in Thursday matchups

The Coffee County boys’ soccer team was unable to keep its recent district match momentum going in a home loss to the Golden Eagles Thursday night.

Trailing 2-1 after the first half, the Red Raiders fell further behind on a pair of second-half Shelbyville goals to bring the match to what was its final score.

The loss put Coffee County at 3-5 overall and 3-2 in Class 3A District 9 play.

Middle School Softball

Coffee County 8, Lincoln County 7

The Lady Raiders battled back from an early 5-0 deficit to win by a run at home against Lincoln County Thursday.

The team finished with 11 hits, led by Addie Haley with four. Amaya Campbell, Kalli Byers and Kayda Ferrell added two each. Izzy Haynes had one hit.

Coffee County also had seven RBI on the evening, with two each for Haley and Campbell. Byers, Ferrell and Liberty Hill each had one.

Campbell pitched a complete game, finishing with four strikeouts, five hits, seven runs and two walks.

Coffee County (10-4) returns to the road with a trip to Stewarts Creek Wednesday. First pitch is scheduled for 4:30 p.m.


Fayetteville City 5, Westwood 2

The Lady Rockets suffered their third straight loss on the road in Fayetteville Thursday evening.

McKenna Kehely had both of the team’s two hits, as well as both RBI.

Paisley Prater got it started in the circle, coming out in the bottom of the fourth inning with three strikeouts, one hit, five runs and five walks. Skyleigh Cooper closed it out from there, adding four strikeouts and one walk through the game’s remainder.

The loss dropped Westwood to 5-7 on the season.

High School Tennis

CHS falls to Lawrence County

Coffee County was back on the road for a match at Lawrence County Wednesday afternoon.

Both the Lady Raiders and Red Raiders came out on the losing end, with the girls falling 4-3 and the boys falling 4-0.

Girls’ singles wins included Isabelle Saner, who defeated Mykah Hughes 8-3. Illy Allen also took down Caroline Sanders 8-4. The girls’ doubles team of Isabelle Saner and Kati McInturff came out on top in their match as well, winning 8-5 over the team of Ella Golden and Sydney Smith.

Westwood 19, Lewisburg 2

The Rockets got back in the win column with a dominant five-inning road win over the Tigers Wednesday.

Westwood finished with 13 hits, led by CJ Chavis Jr. with four. Logan McKenzie followed with three hits. Casen Francisco and Max Stewart both added two hits each. Griffyn Woods and Jackson Vernon each had one hit.

The team also came away with 10 RBI, including three for Chavis Jr. McKenzie and Brock Christian both brought in two each. Francisco, Woods and Vernon each had one RBI.

Chavis Jr. was the Rockets’ starting pitcher, coming off in the bottom of the fourth inning with 10 strikeouts, one hit, one run and five walks. Stewart followed to close it out, adding two strikeouts, two hits and one run through the game’s remainder.

The loss put Westwood at 10-8 on the season.


Stewarts Creek 9, Coffee County 4

The Red Raiders took control in the top of the first inning but fell behind as the game continued in a road loss Wednesday.

Mason Floyd connected on three of the team’s six hits, with one each for Braxton Swack, Tyler Campbell and Tyce DePalma. Swack’s hit came as a three-run home run in the top of the first inning.

Swack’s home run gave him three of the Red Raiders’ four RBI, with Aiden McNeese adding the fourth.

Liam Niece pitched the first four innings, coming off with two strikeouts, five hits, five runs and one walk. Kasen Shelton took over from there, adding four hits, four runs and three walks over the remainder of the game.

The loss dropped Coffee County to 6-4 on the season.

TUESDAY, APRIL 7 RESULTS Middle School Softball

Blackman 13, Coffee County 10

A trio of runs in the top of the seventh broke a 10-10 tie and cost the Lady Raiders in a home loss last Tuesday.

Coffee County finished with 11 hits, led by Haynes with three. Haley and Campbell both added two hits each. Byers, Britlyn Jones, Siri Cruz and Aubrey Brown each had one hit.

Haley led the way in RBI with three of the team’s nine. Haynes followed with two. Jones, Cruz, Brown and Ferrell had one RBI each.

Cruz went the distance in the circle, finishing with four strikeouts, 13 hits, 13 runs and two walks over the course of the game.


Moore County 13, Westwood 5

The Lady Rockets fell behind early on the way to a five-inning home loss last Tuesday.

Prater, Kehely, Harper Hiles and McClayne Finch each had one hit for a team total of four. Kehely, Hiles and Finch also had one RBI each for three on the evening.

Cooper was Westwood’s starting pitcher, coming out in the top of the second inning with two strikeouts, six hits, seven runs and one walk. Kehely took her place, adding nine strikeouts, four hits, six runs and three walks through the game’s remainder.

Harris 14, Westwood 8

Up 8-5 after three innings, six runs for Harris in the top of the fourth cost the Rockets on the way to a home loss last Tuesday.

Westwood finished the game with 10 hits, including two each for McKenzie, Francisco, Vernon and Brock Christian. Chavis Jr. and Woods both had one hit each.

The team also finished with six RBI, led by Woods and Vernon with two each. Chavis Jr. and Brock Christian each had one RBI.

Will Levengood got it started on the mound, coming off in the top of the second inning with one strikeout, one hit, four runs and four walks. Brock Christian followed, finishing in the top of the fourth with two strikeouts, two hits, four runs and five walks. Vernon took his place, adding three strikeouts, five hits, six runs and one walk through the top of the fifth inning. Aidyn Jones closed it out from there, striking out three more Harris batters and giving up three more walks.

MONDAY, APRIL 6 RESULTS High School Tennis

CHS girls win, boys draw against Cannon

The Coffee County tennis team traveled to Cannon County for a road rematch last Monday.

The Lady Raiders came out on top 6-1 in their match, while the Red Raiders finished with a 2-2 draw due to each team being limited to three players.

Girls’ singles wins for Coffee County included McInturff, who won 8-1 over Mackenzie McCurry. Isabelle Saner added an 8-4 win over Bailey Sissom. Allen and Jayna Anderson won their respective matches by scores of 9-8, with Allen winning her tiebreak 7-2 over Bella Mason and Anderson winning hers 7-4 over Ellie Chapman.

In girls’ doubles, the team of Saner and Mc-Inturff won 8-2 over the team of Sissom and Mc-Curry. The team of Allen and Carrington Saner also won their match, taking down Mason and Hannah Pitts 8-3.

On the boys’ side, Colin Bryant won 8-2 over Jaden McMackins. Aidan Hayes also took down Korbin Schultheis by a score of 8-2.

Coffee County 8, White County 7

The Red Raiders opened their week with a close home win over the Warriors last Monday.

Floyd, DePalma, Tripp Trussler, Aiden McNeese and Cooper Melton each had one hit for a team total of five.

Coffee County also had four RBI over the course of the game, with one each for Floyd, Trussler, McNeese and DePalma.

Floyd pitched the first three innings, coming off with five strikeouts, one hit, two runs and three walks. Bentley Ater took his place in the top of the fourth inning, wrapping up his outing in the top of the sixth with two strikeouts, one hit, four runs and five walks. Shelton followed, finishing the inning with one hit, one run and two walks. Swack closed it out in the top of the seventh, striking out one and holding White County to one walk over the game’s remainder.


Harris 6, Westwood 1

The Rockets were held to one run in the top of the fifth inning on the way to a road loss last Monday.

Chavis Jr. came away with two of Westwood’s four hits. Stewart and Owen Holder both had one hit each.

Luke Christian got it started on the mound, coming off in the bottom of the fourth inning with three strikeouts, three hits, two runs and three walks. Woods closed it out from there, adding three strikeouts, three hits, four runs and six walks through the game’s remainder.

Westwood splits Huntland doubleheader

The Lady Rockets kicked off their week with a pair of home games last Monday evening.

Taking on Huntland, Westwood opened it up with a 15-3 victory in the first game before falling 6-2 in the nightcap.

The Lady Rockets finished the first game with 14 hits, led by Maleah Chavis with four. This included a three-run, inside-the-park home run in the bottom of the third inning. Elly Wild followed with three hits. Kehely and Finch both had two hits each. Hiles, Callie Kapise and Izzy Sartain each had one hit.

Chavis brought in six of the team’s 12 RBI. Wild, Kehely, Kapise, Hiles, Sartain and Finch had one RBI each.

Keheley pitched all four innings, finishing the game with five strikeouts, one hit, three runs and three walks. Westwood wrapped up the second game with three hits, including one each for Chavis, Sartain and Finch. This included a two-run, inside-the-park home run for Finch in the fifth inning. The home run also credited Finch with both of the team’s RBI.

Kehely got it started in the circle, coming out after the first inning with two strikeouts, two hits, four runs and three walks. Cooper took her place for the game’s remainder, adding two strikeouts, three hits and two runs.
