Downtown Memphis Commission comments on crime trends in the city

MEMPHIS, Tenn. — Multiple shootings on Beale Street coupled with the shooting of a teenage girl at Tom Lee Park on Tuesday are not the norm for one of the safest zip codes in Memphis.

FOX13 Investigates found crime in Memphis is at a slight uptick each month this year, according to data from the City of Memphis Safer Communities dashboard.

FOX13 Investigates closely examined the data. For the last four out of five years, the numbers show an increase in crime beginning in March and peaking in the summer months.

Data from the dashboard also show so far this year the number of Part 1 crimes, which includes the most serious violent crimes, has increased each month in 2026.

In January 2026, there were about 62 part 1 crimes per day for all of Memphis.

In February 2026, there were almost 70. So far in March, there have been almost 76 per day.

However, the overall number of crimes reported so far this year remains lower than this time last year, when the city saw a historically low crime rate.

Chandell Ryan, president and CEO of the Downtown Memphis Commission, emphasizes 38103 is still one of the safest zip codes in the city, despite the numbers.

“It’s important to know that the real metric when you are determining whether we are having great impacts on crime is whether it is going down year over year, and that is absolutely true for Memphis. That is absolutely true for downtown Memphis. And looking at a month-to-month metric only shows the natural ebbs and flows of it,” she told FOX13.
