PREP ROUNDUP: CHS tennis splits with Franklin County

The Coffee County tennis team was back in action Monday, hosting Franklin County for a boys’ and girls’ matchup.

The Red Raiders picked up their second straight team victory, taking down the Rebels 6-2. The Lady Raiders fell 5-2 in their contest.

Boys’ singles results included 8-4 victories for Colin Bryant over Levi Carl and Aidan Hayes over Colton Cox, respectively. Christian Galindo took down Carter Reed in an 8-3 final. Boys’ singles losses for Coffee County included Ethan Hayes, who fell to William Orr by a score of 8-4. Alfonso Cornejo also came up short in an 8-6 match against Lane Blevans.

In boys’ doubles, it was a clean sweep for the Red Raiders across both matches. The team of Ethan and Aidan Hayes won 8-3 over the team of Orr and Karl. The team of Bryant and Galindo also won 8-3, defeating the team of Cox and Reed.

On the girls’ side, Isabelle Saner won 8-1 in her singles match over Sadie Wells. Jayna Anderson kept it close, but fell 8-6 to Eshita Patel in her singles match. The remaining three singles matches were Coffee County forfeits.

The girls’ doubles team of Saner and Anderson came out on top 8-3 in their matchup, but the remaining doubles match was another Coffee County forfeit.

Coffee County remains at home to host Shelbyville Tuesday.

Middle School Baseball

Westwood 6, Huntland 0

The Rockets picked up their fourth straight win Monday evening, shutting out Huntland on the way to a five-inning home victory.

Westwood finished the game with seven hits, led by Casen Francisco with three. Griffyn Woods followed with two hits. Brock Christian and Logan McKenzie both had one hit each.

McKenzie recorded two of the team’s five RBI. Christian, Woods and Francisco each had one.

Christian earned the win on the mound, striking out seven while holding Huntland to two walks. Max Stewart took his place in the top of the fourth inning, adding another four strikeouts while limiting Huntland to one hit through the game’s remainder.

Westwood (5-1) stays home to host Forrest Friday. First pitch is set for 5:30 p.m.

Middle School Softball

Cascade 7, Westwood 0

The Lady Rockets were held scoreless in their return to the field Monday, falling at home in two and a half innings to the Lady Champions.

Westwood finished the game with one hit.

In the circle, the Lady Rockets wrapped up the evening with four strikeouts, two hits, seven runs and five walks.

Westwood (0-2) will look to bounce back on the road against Moore County Tuesday. First pitch is scheduled for 5 p.m.
