Former band booster pleads guilty to stealing nearly $40,000 from children

DESOTO COUNTY, Miss. – A former band booster pleaded guilty Thursday to stealing nearly $40,000 from the children she was supposed to support.

To top it off, a mugshot shows a big smile on Krystina Thompson’s face.

“Yeah, I was troubled by that,” DeSoto County District Attorney Matthew Barton said. “It seemed like a real lack of remorse.”

The scheme started with a fundraiser for Southaven High School’s band. Band members hit the streets selling chocolate bars. “They did pretty good on the sales, but after it was all over with, the chocolate bar company was like, ‘Hey, you have a balance; you still owe us money,” Barton said.

After the chocolate company raised the red flag, other band boosters started looking into the missing money. They reported the crime to Southaven Police.

Thompson pleaded guilty in court Thursday but will not be sentenced until March. Barton said her sentence will depend on whether she uses the time between to pay back the missing money: “We’re giving her a little bit of time to try to give the children their money back it’s really the only chance she has to help herself at this point.”

She was ordered to pay back the full amount. If she does not, she could face up to 20 years in prison.

Band booster money helps the kids in several ways, including paying for uniforms for children who cannot afford them. The boosters also have a GoFundMe to help recoup that lost money.
