4-year-old Tennessee girl shoots self after father left handgun unsecured, police say

DYERSBURG, Tenn. – A 4-year-old Tennessee girl is fighting for her life after an unsecured gun left behind by her father led to a self-inflicted gunshot wound, police said Tuesday.

No arrests have been made.

According to the Dyersburg Police Department (DPD), officers responded just before 10 p.m. Sunday to a shooting at a home in the city — though officers did not specify a location. They arrived to find blood inside the home but no one around, police said.

“After clearing the home, one of the residents returned,” DPD said.

The father told investigators that his girlfriend woke him up and asked about their daughter. Police said the father found the girl on the couch but could not wake her up.

The father told police that he called 911 before he took his daughter to the hospital. The girl was last listed at critical condition. Police said the father admitted to leaving his handgun unsecured in the living room before he went to sleep.

“This is a terrible situation,” Dyersburg Police Chief Thomas Langford said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to the child and her parents. It underscores the necessity to keep all firearms secured and out of the reach of children.”
