JERNIGAN

Lonnie Charles Jernigan, age 86, of Manchester, TN went to be with his heavenly father Thursday, Aug. 1, 2024. He was born Aug. 5, 1937, in Manchester to the late Charles Lankford and Bessie (Qualls) Jernigan. In addition to his parents, Lonnie is also preceded in death by his wife, Betty Jean (Hill) Jernigan; siblings, Maymie Holder, Ella Mae Davison, and Harry Lee Jernigan; and great grandson, Rowan Hayes.  Lonnie served his country in the United States Air Force and was a member of the Manchester Rescue Squad Civil Defense, the DAV and the VFW.  After his service he worked as a custodian at Arnold Air Force Base.  Lonnie enjoyed fishing, camping, assembling model cars and planes.  Lonnie loved everything about tomatoes, including growing, canning, cooking and eating them.  He also enjoyed watching John Wayne, listening to Fats Domino, and he was baptized. Lonnie is survived by his children, Teresa Steele (James “Mickey”), Ira Charles Jernigan, Sherrie Rogers, Sharon Chaffin (Ernie), and Richard W. Jernigan; siblings, Edna Jernigan, Raleigh Jernigan, Mary Ruth Mullins, Billy Jernigan, and Robert Jernigan; grandchildren, Tisheena Howard, Jeremy Steele, Heather Rogers, Kaley Rogers, Alistair Yates, Tiffany Jernigan, Nathan Walden, Megan Stewart, Morgan Stewart, Jaster Jernigan, Pandora Jernigan, Kathryn Allen, Amelia Allen, Rafael Jernigan, Daken Jernigan, and Arya Jernigan; great grandchildren, Crisslyn Howard, Elijah Howard, Kenley Howard, Kaliver Steele, Gisselle Steele, Kyro Steele, Maddie Ertz, Victor Junior Ramirez, Carson Hannak, Jase Mitchell, Annarah Yates, Gabriel Yates, Ginger Walden, Lycan Hayes, Griffin Hayes, Willow Delfin; three special nieces, Tina Seckler, Carolyn Ridner, and Kim and Christopher Farris; a host of other nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends; and his little best friend, chihuahua dog, Ginger. The family received friends from 4 – 8 p.m. Friday, Aug. 9 and from 9 a.m. – 2 p.m. and Saturday, Aug. 10 at Coffee County Funeral Chapel.  A funeral service was held in the chapel with Brother Raleigh Jernigan officiating.  Interment was at Willow Mount Cemetery in Shelbyville.
