Lady Rockets Fall in Opener

Though the night at Joel Vinson Gymnasium ended in spectacular fashion, it didn’t start out too well for Westwood, as the Lady Rockets lost to the Lady Lions of Cannon County Thursday, October 12.

The Lady Rockets fought hard to start the game, and after the first quarter, Cannon County led by a margin of a point, 13-12.

That momentum carried on into the second quarter, as the visitors from Woodbury only managed another eight points in the quarter, but still led 21-19 at halftime.

After halftime, the pendulum decided to swing in favor of Cannon County. The Lady Lions decided to go on a scoring spree and outpaced the Lady Rockets 19-9 in the third quarter, bringing the score to 40-28.

The visiting team would go up by as many as 23 points in the 4th quarter, before running away with the win, 58-38.

Despite the momentum swing, The Lady Rockets fought hard, and made some nice defensive plays down the stretch, but it wasn’t enough to stifle a red-hot Cannon County offense.

“I didn’t feel like we gave up,” said Coach Shala Ferrell, “but we need to improve on defense as a team.”

Scoring for the Lady Rockets was attributed to Jerzee Ferrell with 9 points, Amelia Johnson with 8, Carter Trail with 8, Allison Russ with 5, Addi Teal with 3, Maci Jackson with 3, and Mia Ahlijah with 1.

The Lady Rockets will get a chance to rebound from their loss when they make the trip to Forrest Middle School for the World Tournament, before facing the rival Red Raiders on Oct. 23.
