Flag retirement ceremony to be June 14
S
Known as a day to celebrate the Stars and Stripes and the millions of Americans that have fought under it since the dawn of the American Revolution, Flag Day will be observed with a Flag Retirement Ceremony by the American Legion.
The event will begin at 5:30 p.m. at the Coffee County Veterans Building, 130 Shelton Road, Manchester.
According to law, the American Flag is never to be thrown away, but ceremonially destroyed with dignity and honor according to ritual.
The Coffee County Veterans Building has an outdoor receptacle in which old flags may be deposited year-round. The local veteran organizations, led by American Legion Gold Star Post 78, store the flags for annual retirement and welcome members of the pubic to attend the event.
Community members of all ages are encouraged to attend to learn more about our American Flag; and why old flags are ceremonially destroyed.
